Family obligations. School and work schedules. Friends or family members who need a favor. The list of to-dos on your calendar probably feels endless, and perhaps even overwhelming. That’s why, now more than ever, you need to take a step back and focus on self-care this month and beyond.

September is National Self-Care Awareness Month, a time when we celebrate acts of kindness toward ourselves and look within to find the things that make us feel whole. By taking care of ourselves, we improve our mood, increase our personal resolve, and experience direct benefits to our mental health. Read on for tips on how you can nourish your mind, body, and soul through the practice of self-care this month and beyond.

First, a Look Back

Self-Care Awareness Month was founded by Evolve to Live, a nonprofit educational organization “dedicated to raising awareness and providing resources to people in transition by promoting Self-Care as a critical component of preventative health medicine.” It’s a time designed to remind us that it’s okay to put ourselves first and take care of our own needs. After all, you can’t fill from an empty cup.

In 2017, September was designated the official National Self-Care Awareness Month, giving us a specific time of year to reflect on the importance of caring for and about our health and not losing ourselves to the daily grind. The month teaches us the value of regular self-care so that we all can benefit mentally, physically, and emotionally.

The Art of Practicing Self-Care

If you’re not used to self-care, it can feel strange to do, and you may forget or not know how to start. That’s why we’ve put together a list of achievable things you can start doing today to make yourself the priority.

Take More “Me” Time
Connecting with yourself is an important part of self-care. We often get lost in the bustle of daily life and forget to prioritize ourselves, and take the time needed to recharge. Schedule time each day just for you, whether it’s a few hours to read a new book in the evening or a half-hour every morning for yoga. Me Time gives you something to look forward to while creating balance in your life.

Practice Mindfulness
These days, it’s often all about the hustle – side gigs for extra money, spending free time on house projects, catching up on the wealth of media available at our fingertips. That’s why it’s so important to step back from the chaos and focus on the now. Take a deep breath, encourage your mind to stay in the present, and meditate on the things you’re thankful for, the things that bring you joy.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors
Part of being mindful of the now includes appreciating the beauty of the natural world all around us. A trip to nature does wonders for both our physical and mental health, that fresh boost of vitamin D helping to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and give an overall sense of rejuvenation. So step outside and enjoy a brisk walk or hike, soak up the sun, watch the red and purple sky during an evening sunset, or sit in the park breathing in the fresh, fragrant air.

Connect with Loved Ones
Friends and family are important, but even more than them? The loved ones – soulmates, you may call them – with whom you can be your authentic self. When you’re focusing on self-care, reach out to the people who love you no matter what and have the meaningful conversations and laugh-out-loud moments that rejuvenate your spirit. Not sure who fills that bucket? Make plans with other friends and family members, from a visit to the local coffee shop to a day of pampering, or even just a virtual call to catch up with someone who lives many miles away. The options are endless!

Enjoy a Laugh
Self-care means finding the laughter in life! We deal with heavy topics every day and hear about even more on the news, so take time to find things that make you laugh. This could be a favorite sitcom or movie, a social media account that never fails to get a chuckle out of you, or perhaps hanging with a goofball friend who enjoys making people smile.

Set Boundaries
Self-care also means remembering it’s okay to say no. Don’t feel like you have to take on the world or say yes to every request, favor, or extra work project. It’s important to not only know your limits, but to verbalize them and establish boundaries at home and within the workplace.

Treat Yourself
Rewarding yourself is a fantastic way to enhance your mental health as well as physical wellness, improving your mood, releasing stress and tensions, and boosting feelings of self-worth. For example, a Swedish massage or hot bath can alleviate sore muscles and remove stress from the body. Buying something pretty can remind us that we are deserving of nice things. Today, find a way to treat yourself, and don’t feel guilty for doing so!

Be Your Own Cheerleader
Self-care is self-love – loving who you are and celebrating all your big and small achievements. Got a new job or promotion? Take yourself out to dinner! Learned a new skill? Show it off to friends and family! Eliminate negative self-talk, believe in yourself, and tell the world just how fantastic you are.

Show Gratitude
Gratitude is an essential practice, a purposeful action that allows you to focus on – and be thankful for – the positive things in your life. As you immerse yourself in self-care this month, take stock of all the wonderful blessings around you. Record those gratitudes in a journal, speak them out loud, or maybe even call a friend or loved one to tell them how grateful you are to have them.

Start a Journal
Sometimes verbalizing our wants, needs, and even fears can be difficult. Journaling is a great way to get those feelings out and share them in a way that feels safe. Simply spending a few minutes each day writing down your thoughts and feelings can have lasting benefits on your mental health.

Unplug from Technology
Technology is a great thing – it connects us to loved ones and the rest of the world, keeps us informed on important news, and offers endless hours of entertainment. But, just as we can benefit from tech, we can also profit from unplugging, especially as we’re preparing for bed. Taking a break from online noise helps calm our brains and promote much-needed relaxation.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Quality sleep is vital for brain health. It allows our bodies to recharge and gives our health the TLC it deserves to take on each new day. Keep to a set schedule for going to bed and waking up, making sure to get a full night’s sleep with no distractions (that means no screens!). It’s also helpful to create a cozy area for relaxing, with soft lighting, a fan or sound machine if preferred, and comfortable bedding to encourage rest.

Take Care of Your Health
When we’re overwhelmed with life, handling work deadlines, family obligations, and daily stressors, it’s easy to forget that we also need to take care of ourselves. Now is the time to address health issues you may be ignoring, or to simply go for a checkup to ensure all is as it should be. After all, self-care also means health care!

Ask for Help with Your Health

When you’re struggling to prioritize yourself and set healthy boundaries, or you’re struggling with depressive moods or anxious thoughts, reach out to your support network for help. This may be a best friend or a trusted family member, or a mental health professional.

We at Mindful Health Solutions know that sometimes you need a helping hand on the path to mental wellness, and we encourage acts of self-care to revitalize your health. We’re here to provide treatment options that support you on your journey to mental wellness.

Remember, self-care is not selfish. It’s an essential component of your overall health and an important stepping stone in your personal growth. Contact us today to find out how you can take greater care of your mental health and experience the benefits of self-care this September and all the months to come.

Mental wellness is a year-long practice, an everyday reminder to be kind to ourselves, prioritize our personal well-being, and concentrate on self-care. As we move into National Wellness Awareness Month this August, it’s equally important to take time to reflect on what it means to be physically, mentally, and emotionally well – and review tips for achieving just that.

Living a More Fulfilling & Balanced Life

What are the different types of wellness, and what do they mean? Here, we’ll look at three of the top focuses for your overall health.

Mental Wellness
Mental health is a cornerstone of your personal well-being. Maintaining a healthy mind looks different for every person, but can involve connecting with others and building a strong system of friends and loved ones around you. It’s important to nurture relationships, be mindful of circumstances causing anxiety or depression, or even seek support when necessary.

This support network is crucial, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation in order to live longer, happier lives. Engaging with our communities even helps protect us against serious illness and disease, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Physical Wellness
A healthy body helps lead to a healthy mind. As you prioritize your mental wellness, so too should you focus on physical aspects of daily life like exercising regularly, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep – all of which ties into mental health as well.

Sometimes, making lifestyle changes can feel overwhelming. In these moments, just start small! Research new recipes and save them for later, take a walk around the block, or enjoy a catnap. Even seemingly minor changes in your day can make major improvements over time.

Emotional Wellness
Emotional health is all about regulation – controlling not only how we feel about ourselves and the world around us but also how we react to a given situation or stressful environment. This could mean showing ourselves and others more compassion, expressing gratitude, discovering coping or resilience skills, or even finding a new purpose in life.

Quick Tips for Improving Wellness

Set Attainable Goals
Determine what changes you want to make in your life to improve your wellness, and establish achievable goals in a timeline that works best for you.

Practice Self-Care
Set time aside each day to enjoy activities that encourage mental and physical rejuvenation, such as reading, yoga, walking or hiking, gardening, or pursuing hobbies.

Stay Hydrated
Get your daily water intake for optimal health, whether by carrying a reusable water bottle or setting timers to remind yourself to take a drink.

Eat Well
Focus on healthy snacks and recipes, eat “junk” foods only in moderation, and practice mindful eating to improve digestion while enjoying each meal.

Exercise Regularly
Find physical activities you like doing, like jogging, yoga, dancing, biking, and walking – and do them for at least 30 minutes a day to reduce stress and improve mood.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Establish a bedtime routine and stick to it, limiting screens and distractions, and avoiding late nights in order to regulate your body’s internal clock.

Connect with Your Community
Build and strengthen relationships with loved ones by participating in local events or activities, volunteering, or simply enjoying the company of a friend or family member.

Show Gratitude
Embracing positivity and regularly taking stock of all the things you’re grateful for can help improve resilience and boost self-esteem.

Seek Support
When making changes on your own isn’t enough, reach out to a qualified mental health professional for help with your mental or emotional struggles.

“Just think positive thoughts.” We’ve all heard the saying at some point, from well-meaning friends or family members when we’re going through tough times. But for those experiencing depression, it often feels like an empty sentiment. Depression is a draining disease, robbing a person of hope and willpower, and even just attempting to “think positive” can seem like too big a task to achieve.

That’s where positive affirmations come in. Through small steps and minor changes in one’s daily life, the seemingly impossible – recovery from depression – can become a reality. In this blog we’ll explore ways to take control of our narrative and how positive affirmations can help combat depression symptoms.

The Benefits of Positive Affirmations

 • Work through mental health struggles
 • Improve self-esteem & self-confidence
 • Combat symptoms of depression and anxiety
 • Overcome feelings of isolation
 • Reduce stress levels
 • Better manage negative situations
 • Find your motivation again

Taking the First Step

Do you tend to beat yourself up with harsh words? Do hurtful thoughts consume your mind and control your emotions? Depressive symptoms often include negative thoughts that affect not only the way we see ourselves, but the way we talk about ourselves as well.

That’s why recovery from depression starts from within. Changing the way we talk to and about ourselves is a vital first step in overcoming depressive thoughts and inviting peace into our lives. This may seem like an overwhelming first step, but it’s all about starting small and focusing on the now by:

 • Celebrating strengths and daily achievements
 • Visualizing what “happiness” looks like to you
 • Practicing self-care and compassion
 • Engaging in activities that bring you joy
 • Utilizing positive affirmations

Speak Hope into Existence with Positive Affirmations

Depression often makes us feel powerless, training our brains to expect the worst to happen to happen, and to believe the worst in ourselves. Focusing on the good each day gets us started in overcoming symptoms of depression; next we need to speak positive affirmations that remind us to change the way we see ourselves.

If speaking affirmations feels like too much, try just writing them down! Put Post-It notes with positive words around your home or workspaces in places where you’ll regularly see them – the more you read the affirmations, the more likely you are to speak them into existence.

Some positive affirmations may include:

 • I am worthy of love.
 • Depression is temporary. I will overcome it.
 • I am not my depression.
 • My past does not – and will not – define me.
 • I am letting go of negative thoughts.
 • This too shall pass.
 • I choose to focus on the positive.
 • I am enough.
 • Every day is a gift.
 • It’s okay to ask for help.
 • I deserve to be joyful.
 • I am grateful for my life.
 • I love myself.
 • I can overcome anything.
 • I have so much to offer the world.
 • I am surrounded by people who love me.
 • I am resilient in the face of adversity.
 • I am in charge of my happiness.
 • I welcome positive change.
 • I have faith in myself.
 • I release negativity from my life.
 • I am grateful for the little things in life, and I focus on the positive aspects of every situation.
 • I am capable of achieving my goals.
 • I welcome peace and happiness into my life.
 • My thoughts are within my control, and I choose positivity.
 • The power to create the life I desire is within me.

As You See, It’s More Than Just Thinking Positive

It’s about challenging and reframing long-standing negative thoughts, and replacing them with a new outlook that works through depressive thinking to find positive solutions. For example, rather than thinking in absolutes (“My life will never get better.”), reframing the thought to allow for more middle ground (“I’m going through a tough time, but it will get better.”). Other examples may include:

“I did terrible on that job interview. I’ll never be hired.” –> “Some of those questions were pretty tough, but I answered them as best I could and showcased my experience well.”

“I can’t believe I ate so much, I’m so weak.” –> “I deserve a treat, and that extra cookie was delicious.”

“Everyone hates me.” –> “I’m surrounded by people who love me, and I’m worthy of their love.”

Even if these affirmations sound hollow in the beginning, keep going. The more you read and speak positivity, the more you are reframing negative thoughts and recognizing that symptoms of depression aren’t reality.

Do Positive Affirmations Really Work?

Positive affirmations are a great way to boost one’s self-esteem and overall mood. However, it’s important to note that they should not be seen as a cure for depression, but as a technique for helping to manage symptoms and create a more positive mindset alongside professional treatment.

While affirmations are simple statements, when used consistently they become ingrained into one’s subconscious. And when used alongside traditional treatment, they help a person struggling with depression better identify negative thought processes and manage emotions in triggering environments or situations.

Thanksgiving & the Practice of Gratitude: Creating a More Positive & Thankful Life https://mindfulhealthsolutions.com/thanksgiving-the-practice-of-gratitude-creating-a-more-positive-thankful-life/ Wed, 27 Nov 2024 08:00:58 +0000 https://mindfulhealthsolutions.com/?p=8014 Discover the mental health benefits of practicing gratitude this Thanksgiving.

The post Thanksgiving & the Practice of Gratitude: Creating a More Positive & Thankful Life appeared first on Mindful Health Solutions.

]]>

Every year, we enjoy Thanksgiving celebrations in our own unique and festive ways. No matter the celebration, we often are reminded that Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, to be thankful for all of life’s blessings both big and small, and to reflect on the good surrounding us. But just as there is excitement for the day’s bounty of food, family, and friends, sometimes the holiday may also come with feelings of anxiety or depression.

As you take stock of the good things in your life, it’s beneficial to understand why being thankful is so important for your physical and mental health, as well as where to turn if you need a little extra help.

Gratitude: a Whole-Body Experience

It’s no secret that our minds naturally navigate toward negative thoughts. We worry about what can go wrong, what someone thinks of us, how many bills are stacking up this month, and all the “what ifs.” In turn, these worries lower levels of “feel-good” hormones associated with happiness like dopamine and serotonin, which then lead to feelings of anxiety and/or depression. Over time, that drop in hormones can cause long-lasting negative effects on one’s mental well-being.

The practice of giving, on the other hand, gives us those “warm and fuzzy” feelings. This is our brain’s reaction to gratitude. Neurologically speaking, thankfulness activates parts of the brain associated with reward and positive emotions, triggering the release of neurotransmitters, dopamine, and serotonin. Moreover, continuously experiencing gratitude can increase activity of the hypothalamus, which is vital for essential daily functions like eating and sleeping. All in all, proving that gratitude is a powerful emotion that truly improves our mood from the inside out.

Thanksgiving is a great reminder to practice gratitude, but such studies show that it should be a year-long exercise in order to benefit from long-term feelings of happiness. By regularly practicing gratitude, you are helping your brain strengthen neural networks while training yourself to navigate toward positive thoughts rather than negative, as well as inspiring change in those around you.

Gratitude: Uniting Our Communities

Success and failure, joy and sorrow, gratification and frustration, these are all part of our everyday lives. For those struggling with mood or anxiety disorders, it can be easy to focus only on what’s going wrong, and isolate ourselves when we can’t see the good – and those we care about may exhibit the same symptoms as they struggle with their mental health.

That’s why Thanksgiving is the perfect time to think about community. This time of year invites us to reflect on the value those around us bring into our lives, and to show our gratitude through action. Mentoring a young adult, providing a listening ear to someone who needs advice, shoveling snow for an elderly neighbor, giving a coworker a ride home, or simply offering a greeting and a smile – donating your time and attention shows others that you value them and, in turn, gives them reasons to be grateful.

Gratitude inspires kindness within ourselves and others, not only strengthening existing connections amongst friends and neighbors, but also inspiring hope in strangers who may be in need of support and encouraging them to pay it forward. When an entire community of people are able to see and practice gratitude, they are more likely to take action all year long to make the world a better place not just for themselves but for others around them.

Gratitude: an Intentional Effort

By staying focused on the positive this Thanksgiving, you can weed out the negative emotions and reaffirm everything you have to be thankful for. Below are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

Make a Plan
You don’t have to do it all alone! Plan out your meal, travel arrangements, cleaning schedule, and any other holiday tasks. Then, delegate as needed to share the responsibilities and make time for yourself.

Don’t Worry about Imperfections
There’s no such thing as perfect, and striving for it can cause unnecessary stress. Allow yourself to laugh at the mishaps and embrace the authenticity of imperfection as you spend time with loved ones.

Take Moments for Yourself
When you need a break, don’t be afraid to take a walk, step into another room, go for a drive, or decompress with a few minutes of internet scrolling.

Seek Support
If you need a helping hand this holiday season, don’t hesitate to ask. That may be a close friend or trusted family member, or a mental health professional. For outside support, Mindful Health Solutions is here for you.

We encourage you to savor the big and small moments that bring you joy this Thanksgiving, reflect on the value you bring to the world, and pay tribute to others by practicing gratitude. Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving!

National Life Writing Month and the power of sharing your story.

Journaling, note-taking, working on that long-overdue memoir … whatever the form, writing is a wonderful way to take stock of one’s life. National Life Writing Month, which takes place every November, is the perfect time to do just that – tell your story and share all the big and small moments that make you, you.

“Writing is a process, a journey into memory and the soul.”
– Isabel Allende

When life feels overwhelming, anxieties are running rampant, and stress levels are at all-time highs, it’s easy to feel like our stories don’t matter, that we are just another cog in a nameless, ever-spinning wheel. Depression can be just as confusing and isolating, making it hard to recognize when support is needed most. Worse, it can deceive our inner Selves, spreading the silent lie that no one cares what we have to say.

At Mindful Health Solutions, we are here to tell you – your story matters. And there’s no better time than right now to make it heard. From personal anecdotes to family traditions, milestone events to silly inside jokes amongst friends, these are the moments worth sharing. During the rest of November and beyond, we encourage you to take that journey into memory and soul, reflecting on life and the legacy you want to leave behind.

Think You’re Not a Writer? Think Again!

Finding the right medication for depression can be a time-consuming and frustrating process. But for tYou don’t have to be a best-seller to enjoy National Life Writing Month. All you need is the drive to get the words out of your head and committed to paper. Check out some tips below on how to get those creative juices flowing.

Don’t Overthink
National Life Writing Month should be therapeutic, not work. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect. Instead, take a deep breath, relax your body, and let the memories come to you.

Start Wherever Feels Right
Who says you have to write in order? Whether it’s ten years in the past, goals for the future, or experiences in this very moment, your story is yours to tell in the order of your choosing.

Find Physical Reminders
Filtering through our mind’s memories can be both fun and challenging. Take a break from the mental process and spend time looking through the physical reminders of life – old photographs, videos taken with friends and family, snail-mail letters. These are a great way to add even more value and emotion to your story.

Ignore the Noise
Loud neighbors, rowdy kids, blaring televisions, and even that voice in your head casting doubt, it’s all noise to be tuned out. Find the writing place that suits your style and get lost in the words. Maybe it’s a popular coffee shop, or beneath a tree at the park. Or perhaps you feel most creative at home, surrounded by family and pets. There’s no right or wrong place to let your inner voice start talking.

Embrace the Imperfections
In the beginning, don’t worry about having perfect grammar or syntax. Get the thoughts out and handle the fine tuning later. That’s what editing is for!

Have Fun
Most importantly, have fun with your story! Remember, this is all about your life and no one else’s. Even if your words are only read by you and no one else, make sure you’re enjoying the process.

We Want to Hear Your Story

Sometimes, it’s hard to see our worth through the fog of depression. When expressing ourselves in words isn’t enough, it can be helpful to share our thoughts with professionals able to guide us through the maze of self-doubt and hopelessness.

At Mindful Health Solutions, we’ve helped thousands of patients heal. Our team of compassionate practitioners is committed to listening to your history, reviewing symptoms, concerns, and anything else you feel is important for them to know in order to advocate for your health.

Through innovative treatments like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Spravato (Esketamine), and Ketamine Infusion Therapy, we take a collaborative approach that guides you on the path to happiness. Reach out today to discuss a customized treatment plan that helps you find relief in the way that best feels like “you.”

The post 8 Practical Tips to Improve Confidence for a Healthier View of Your Self-Image appeared first on Mindful Health Solutions.

]]>
Your self-image is how you see yourself, and it influences everything from your confidence to your mental health. Whether you’re aware of it or not, the way you perceive yourself impacts how you navigate the world. If you’re constantly critical of yourself, it’s easy to fall into negative thinking patterns. However, by working on your self-image, you can cultivate more positivity, build self-esteem, and lead a more fulfilling life.

In this post, we’ll walk through 8 practical tips to help you improve your self-image and build a healthier, kinder relationship with yourself.

1. Practice Self-Compassion

We all experience setbacks, make mistakes, and have bad days. But how we respond to these moments plays a significant role in shaping our self-image. Practicing self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a close friend during tough times.

Actionable Advice: The next time you find yourself being overly critical, pause and ask, “What would I say to a friend going through this?” Reframe your internal dialogue to be more supportive. Instead of harsh thoughts like, “I’m not good enough,” try, “I’m doing the best I can, and that’s okay.”

Example: When you miss a deadline or make an error at work, instead of dwelling on the mistake, remind yourself that everyone slips up occasionally. Tell yourself, “This is a learning experience,” and focus on moving forward with a constructive mindset.

2. Set Realistic, Achievable Goals

One of the easiest ways to damage your self-image is by setting unrealistic goals. When goals are too big or vague, they can feel overwhelming, leading to feelings of inadequacy or failure. Instead, break larger goals into smaller, more achievable steps.

Actionable Advice: Instead of saying, “I need to be perfect at my job,” try setting specific, measurable goals like, “I will complete my project by focusing on one section at a time.” Celebrate each milestone along the way, and give yourself credit for the progress you’re making.

Example: If you’re working on personal fitness, don’t aim to run a marathon in a month if you’ve never run before. Instead, focus on smaller steps, like jogging for 10 minutes three times a week, and gradually increase the time and intensity as you build your endurance.

3. Embrace Your Unique Qualities to Boost Self-Image

Society often pressures us to fit into certain molds or adhere to unrealistic standards. However, improving your self-image means recognizing and celebrating what makes you unique. Embracing your individuality can give you a sense of pride and foster a more positive self-image.

Actionable Advice: Make a list of your unique strengths, skills, and traits. It could be anything from being a great listener to having a knack for solving problems. When you feel down, refer to this list to remind yourself of what makes you special.

Example: If you’re introverted and feel insecure in social situations, remind yourself that your quiet, reflective nature is valuable in other ways. You may excel at one-on-one conversations, or your thoughtful nature might make you a great problem solver. Instead of comparing yourself to more extroverted peers, celebrate your own strengths.

4. Develop Positive Self-Dialogue to Improve Your Self-Image

The way we talk to ourselves internally has a powerful impact on how we see ourselves. Negative self-talk can easily spiral into self-doubt and low self-esteem. To improve your self-image, focus on shifting that inner dialogue to a more positive tone.

Actionable Advice: When negative thoughts arise, challenge them. Ask yourself if there’s evidence to support these thoughts or if you’re being overly critical. Reframe these thoughts into more supportive, constructive ones. For instance, if you think, “I always fail,” try replacing it with, “I’m learning from my mistakes, and I’ll do better next time.”

Example: Instead of focusing on what you didn’t accomplish during the day, remind yourself of the things you did achieve, no matter how small. This shift in perspective can help create a more balanced and realistic view of yourself.

5. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

The people we surround ourselves with can either build us up or tear us down. If you’re constantly around negative influences or people who criticize you, it will naturally affect your self-image. On the other hand, supportive and uplifting relationships can significantly improve how you view yourself.

Actionable Advice: Take stock of your current relationships and assess how they make you feel. Are the people in your life encouraging and supportive, or do they bring negativity? Prioritize spending time with those who build you up and make you feel good about yourself.

Example: If you find that certain friendships are consistently draining or leave you feeling worse about yourself, it may be time to set boundaries or limit the time you spend with those individuals. Instead, seek out friends and loved ones who celebrate your successes and offer constructive feedback when needed.

6. Focus on What You Can Control to Improve Your Self-Image

It’s easy to fall into the trap of worrying about things out of our control—like what others think or how external events unfold. However, focusing on what you can control, like your personal growth, habits, and actions, can help you feel more empowered and improve your self-image.

Actionable Advice: When faced with a challenge or negative situation, ask yourself, “What can I control in this situation?” By shifting your focus to things you can actively change or influence, you’ll feel more in control and less overwhelmed.

Example: If you receive criticism at work, instead of dwelling on how it made you feel, focus on what you can do to improve. Take constructive feedback to heart, and view it as an opportunity for growth rather than a reflection of your worth.

7. Limit Social Media Consumption

Social media often presents an idealized version of life, making it easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. Constant comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy and harm your self-image. Limiting your social media use or curating your feed can help improve your self-esteem.

Actionable Advice: Set boundaries for your social media use. You could establish a time limit for how long you spend on social platforms each day or choose to take regular breaks. Additionally, unfollow accounts that make you feel insecure or encourage negative comparisons.

Example: If you find yourself constantly comparing your appearance or achievements to others on Instagram, consider taking a break from the platform. Use that time to focus on real-life experiences that bring you joy, rather than scrolling through curated images of other people’s lives.

8. Celebrate Your Achievements to Boost Self-Image

Often, we get so caught up in the big picture that we forget to acknowledge the small wins along the way. Recognizing your accomplishments, whether they’re large or tiny, can have a significant impact on your self-image.

Actionable Advice: Create a habit of celebrating your daily achievements. It could be something as small as getting through a tough workout or completing a task at work. Writing down your achievements in a journal can also help you reflect on your progress and boost your self-esteem over time.

Example: If you’re working on a long-term project, don’t wait until it’s completed to celebrate. Take time to recognize each milestone you reach, whether it’s finishing a small part of the task or receiving positive feedback.

Improving your self-image is a continuous process that requires patience and effort. By practicing self-compassion, setting realistic goals, embracing your unique qualities, and developing positive self-talk, you can begin to shift your perspective and build a healthier relationship with yourself. Surround yourself with supportive people, focus on what you can control, limit social media, and celebrate your achievements—big or small.

Remember, progress doesn’t happen overnight, but each small step you take can lead to lasting change. Take action today by choosing one of the tips above and begin the journey toward a more positive self-image.

]]>

Anxiety is a mental health condition that impacts millions of people across the globe. While it’s natural to experience anxiety in certain situations, for many, it can become overwhelming and disruptive, affecting their daily lives. One of the key steps in managing anxiety is understanding what triggers it. Triggers are events, situations, or even thoughts that can spark anxiety or make existing symptoms worse. Identifying these triggers allows you to take control of your mental health, providing a foundation for coping strategies and treatments. In this post, we’ll explore common anxiety triggers and offer practical tips on how to manage them.

Understanding Anxiety Triggers

What Are Anxiety Triggers?

Anxiety triggers are specific situations, environments, or thoughts that provoke an anxiety response. These triggers can be external, such as a stressful situation at work, or internal, such as worrying about a potential health issue. It’s important to note that triggers can vary greatly from person to person. What may cause intense anxiety in one person might not affect another at all. By recognizing your own triggers, you can better prepare to manage your anxiety when they arise.

The Impact of Anxiety Triggers on Mental Health

When anxiety triggers are activated, they can lead to a range of symptoms, including increased heart rate, sweating, feelings of dread, and even panic attacks. Over time, frequent exposure to these triggers without proper management can lead to chronic anxiety or worsen existing mental health conditions. Understanding the impact of triggers on your mental health is crucial for developing effective coping strategies and seeking appropriate treatment.

Anxiety attack or panic attack? How to tell the difference.

Common Anxiety Triggers

Stressful Life Events

Major life changes such as moving to a new city, going through a divorce, or losing a job can be significant triggers for anxiety. These events often bring uncertainty and a lack of control, which can heighten feelings of anxiety.

When facing a stressful life event, it’s important to break the situation down into manageable steps. For example, if you’re moving to a new city, start by organizing your move into smaller tasks, such as packing one room at a time. Seek support from friends, family, or a counselor to talk through your feelings and get practical advice. Additionally, practicing self-care, such as maintaining a healthy routine of exercise, sleep, and nutrition, can help you stay grounded during times of stress.

Social Situations

Public speaking, meeting new people, or attending large gatherings can be common triggers for social anxiety. The fear of being judged or not knowing what to say can lead to avoidance of these situations, which only reinforces the anxiety over time.

Preparing ahead of time can reduce anxiety in social situations. Practice what you want to say, and visualize a positive outcome. Gradual exposure therapy, where you slowly introduce yourself to the feared situation in a controlled way, can also be highly effective. Cognitive-behavioral strategies, such as challenging negative thoughts and focusing on your strengths, can help you build confidence.

Health Concerns

Worrying about chronic illness, the fear of getting sick, or frequent visits to the doctor can trigger health-related anxiety. This type of anxiety often involves obsessively thinking about health problems and interpreting normal physical sensations as signs of serious illness.

It’s important to stay informed about your health, but try not to let it dominate your thoughts. Regular health check-ups can provide reassurance, but avoid excessive medical testing unless recommended by a doctor. Focus on what you can control, such as following a healthy lifestyle, and use relaxation techniques like deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation to reduce anxiety.

Financial Worries

Debt, budgeting issues, and sudden financial changes, such as job loss, can be significant sources of anxiety. Financial stress can create a sense of instability and fear about the future, which can spiral into anxiety.

Creating a realistic financial plan can help you take control of your situation. Start by assessing your financial situation and setting achievable goals, such as paying off a small debt first. Seek advice from a financial counselor if needed, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from trusted friends or family. Setting aside time each week to review your finances can help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Tight deadlines, high expectations, and job insecurity are common workplace triggers for anxiety. The pressure to perform can lead to constant worry about making mistakes or not meeting expectations, which can increase stress levels.

Time management strategies, such as prioritizing tasks and breaking them into smaller steps, can help you stay on top of your workload without feeling overwhelmed. Setting boundaries is also crucial; learn to say no when you’re overextended, and make time for breaks throughout the day. If job insecurity is causing anxiety, consider discussing your concerns with your supervisor or exploring other job opportunities.

Feeling stressed out? Try these 10 simple time management strategies.

Environmental Factors

Overcrowded places, loud noises, and chaotic environments can be overwhelming and trigger anxiety. These factors can create a sense of being out of control or trapped, leading to heightened anxiety.

Identifying your environmental triggers can help you avoid or modify your surroundings to reduce anxiety. If crowded places are a trigger, try visiting them during off-peak hours. Creating a calming environment at home, with soft lighting, soothing music, and comfortable spaces, can provide a sanctuary where you can recharge. Mindfulness practices, such as focusing on your breathing or using grounding techniques, can help you stay centered in stressful environments.

Personal Relationships

Conflicts with family or friends, relationship issues, and even the pressure of maintaining close relationships can trigger anxiety. The fear of rejection, judgment, or not being understood can cause significant stress in relationships.

Open and honest communication is key to managing anxiety in relationships. Expressing your feelings and setting boundaries can help prevent misunderstandings and reduce anxiety. If a relationship is particularly stressful, consider seeking the guidance of a therapist or counselor to work through the issues together. Building a strong support network of trusted friends and family members can also provide comfort and reassurance.

Media Consumption

Overexposure to negative news or the constant comparison on social media can be major anxiety triggers. The barrage of information, especially if it’s negative, can create a sense of hopelessness or inadequacy.

Limiting your media intake, especially before bed, can help reduce anxiety. Curate your social media feed to include positive and uplifting content, and consider taking regular digital detoxes to disconnect and recharge. It’s important to stay informed, but balance it with other activities that bring joy and relaxation.

Try a digital detox and reclaim control of your screen time.

Past Trauma

Flashbacks or reminders of past traumatic events, such as abuse, accidents, or other significant trauma, can trigger intense anxiety. These triggers can bring back vivid memories and emotions associated with the trauma, leading to heightened anxiety or panic attacks.

Therapy, particularly trauma-focused therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), can be highly effective in addressing past trauma. Grounding techniques, such as focusing on the present moment and using your senses to stay connected to the here and now, can also help manage anxiety when triggered by past trauma. Building a strong support network of trusted individuals can provide a safe space to talk about your experiences and feelings.

Physical Symptoms

Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, and other physical symptoms can often be mistaken for serious medical issues, triggering anxiety. These symptoms can create a vicious cycle where the anxiety about the symptoms actually makes them worse.

Learning to recognize the difference between anxiety symptoms and physical health issues is crucial. Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, to calm your body and reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms are related to anxiety or a physical health issue, consult with a healthcare professional for reassurance and guidance.

General Strategies for Managing Anxiety Triggers

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Manage Anxiety Triggers

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used therapeutic approach that can help you reframe negative thought patterns and develop healthier responses to anxiety triggers. Working with a therapist, you can learn to identify and challenge irrational thoughts, replace them with more balanced thinking, and gradually expose yourself to anxiety-provoking situations in a controlled way.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga, into your daily routine can help you stay grounded and reduce anxiety. These techniques focus on bringing your attention to the present moment, helping you break the cycle of worry and fear.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are all essential for managing anxiety. Physical activity can help reduce stress hormones and increase endorphins, which improve mood. Eating a healthy diet can stabilize your energy levels and reduce anxiety symptoms while getting enough sleep helps your body and mind recover from the stresses of the day.

Building a Support System

Having a strong support network of friends, family, and support groups can provide comfort and reassurance during anxious times. Talking about your feelings with someone you trust can help you process emotions and gain a different perspective on your triggers.

Professional Help

If your anxiety is overwhelming or persistent, seeking help from a mental health professional is important. Therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists can offer personalized treatment options, including therapy, medication, or a combination of both, to help you manage your anxiety effectively.

Understanding and managing anxiety triggers is a crucial step toward taking control of your mental health. By identifying your triggers and implementing the strategies discussed in this post, you can reduce the impact of anxiety on your life.

Every year, millions of young adults leave home for the first time to get jobs, attend college, join the military, or get married. For parents or guardians left in the proverbial nest, this can be a joyful time, but also an emotional and potentially difficult one. It is common to experience a period of mourning and readjustment known as Empty Nest Syndrome (ENS). However, empty nesters experiencing prolonged grief should understand the differences between ENS and depression when to seek medical assistance for depression, and the range of bereavement support and depression treatment options, from support groups to Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy.

Understanding Empty Nest Syndrome and Its Impact

After 18-plus years of caring for their children, empty nesters may feel a mix of emotions: happiness, pride, or relief, as well as sadness and emptiness at a lack of companionship. While their children are experiencing new places, forging new friendships, and exploring their identities, empty nesters remain in the same spaces, which can serve as a continual reminder of their children’s absence. Parents and guardians also follow the same routines, minus their childrearing duties; with less to distract them, they may feel the absence of their kids even more acutely. Caretakers can experience a loss of identity and direction, especially those who stayed home to raise their children. Those who worked many hours while childrearing may regret not having spent more time with their kids.

The Overlap of Depression and Empty Nest Syndrome

Studies show that up to 25% of empty nesters develop Empty Nest Syndrome. There are many steps they can take to deal with sadness over their children’s departure, including figuring out ways to keep in touch with their kids, exploring new hobbies, and reaching out to friends and fellow empty nesters. However, this major life change may also trigger depressive episodes in parents, especially those predisposed to it. For those who already experience major depression, their symptoms may worsen.

While there is some overlap between the symptoms of Empty Nest Syndrome and depression, the latter is more debilitating, centers around feelings of personal inadequacy, and typically cannot be eased by common therapeutic activities, such as talking with friends, finding a new hobby, or volunteering.

Symptoms of depression include:

 • Little interest or pleasure in doing things
 • Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless
 • Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much
 • Feeling tired or having little energy
 • Poor appetite or overeating
 • Feeling bad about yourself, that you’re a failure or have let yourself or your family down
 • Trouble concentrating on activities, such as reading the newspaper or watching television
 • Moving or speaking so slowly that other people notice. Or, the opposite, being so fidgety or restless that you move around a lot more than usual.
 • Thoughts that you would be better off dead or hurting yourself in some way

Although Empty Nest Syndrome can contribute to or deepen depression in both sexes, women may be particularly susceptible. ENS can coincide with the onset of menopause, which may result in mood swings, sleep deprivation, hot flashes, and other agitating symptoms.* Around the same time, aging relatives may start to need caregiving, and women often shoulder the majority of this work.

Seeking Bereavement Support and Depression Treatment

If you are an empty nester experiencing symptoms of depression for longer than two weeks, consider seeking bereavement support and treatment from your doctor. For those experiencing a long-term pattern of depressive symptoms, the feelings of loss associated with an “empty nest” may compel them to finally seek relief. Although the sadness, despair, or anxiousness may seem overwhelming, it is possible to regain a sense of joy. For some with lifelong depression, this might even be the first time they truly feel it.

Your doctor may suggest attending a support group or seeing a psychologist for counseling sessions. If you are experiencing more severe or longstanding symptoms, you may be referred to a psychiatrist, who will be able to prescribe medications such as short- or long-term antidepressants.

Exploring TMS: A Non-Invasive Alternative for Treating Depression

As an alternative to medication and more drastic treatments, patients now have the option of TMS. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive outpatient treatment that uses magnetic energy to stimulate brain receptors. Approved by the FDA in 2008 to treat depression, a course of TMS typically includes three to five sessions lasting 30-60 minutes. Most patients report no discomfort during the procedures and very few side effects between visits. Clinical studies have shown that TMS is effective in about 60% of patients, or twice as effective as antidepressants. Importantly, TMS has proven particularly effective in patients for whom medications do not work. TMS patients also typically experience far fewer side effects than those on medications alone.

Anxiety is something that many of us experience, often at the most inconvenient times. Whether it’s the pressure of an upcoming deadline, the stress of social situations, or simply the overwhelming pace of daily life, these anxious feelings can creep up on us, leaving us in a state of unease. The good news is that there are practical techniques you can use to manage your anxiety in the moment. Below, we’ll explore 11 calming techniques that you can easily incorporate into your day, helping you regain control and find peace.

1. Deep Breathing Exercises for Anxious Moments

Deep breathing is one of the most effective ways to reduce anxiety quickly. When you’re anxious, your breathing becomes shallow and rapid, which can exacerbate feelings of panic. Deep breathing, on the other hand, calms your nervous system by sending a message to your brain to relax.

How to Practice: A simple technique to try is the 4-7-8 breathing method. Start by inhaling through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, and then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat this cycle a few times until you feel more relaxed.

When to Use: Deep breathing can be particularly effective before a stressful event, such as a presentation or an important meeting. It’s also a great tool to use during your commute or whenever you need a moment of calm.

2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) to Ease Anxious Tension

Anxiety often manifests physically in the form of muscle tension. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) helps release this tension by systematically tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups in your body.

How to Practice: Start by tensing the muscles in your toes and holding for a few seconds before releasing. Gradually work your way up your body, tensing and relaxing each muscle group. Pay close attention to the difference between how your muscles feel when they’re tensed versus when they’re relaxed.

When to Use: PMR is ideal for winding down before bed or during a panic attack when your body feels particularly tense.

3. Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. It’s a powerful technique to reduce anxiety by helping you disengage from the worries that fuel your anxious feelings.

How to Practice: Find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing or a specific sensation in your body. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your focus back to your breath or the sensation you’re concentrating on.

When to Use: Mindfulness meditation can be practiced at any time of the day, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed by racing thoughts.

5 simple techniques for starting meditation.

4. Visualization Techniques to Calm Anxious Minds

Visualization can be a highly effective way to calm your mind by shifting your focus away from anxiety. By picturing a peaceful scene, you can mentally transport yourself to a place of calm.

How to Practice: Close your eyes and imagine a place where you feel safe and relaxed, such as a beach or a forest. Engage all your senses in the visualization—hear the waves, feel the warmth of the sun, smell the fresh air.

When to Use: Visualization is particularly effective when you’re facing a stressful situation or struggling to fall asleep due to anxiety.

5. Grounding Techniques

Grounding techniques help anchor you to the present moment, which can be especially useful when anxiety makes you feel disconnected or overwhelmed.

How to Practice: A popular grounding technique is the 5-4-3-2-1 method. Identify five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This exercise shifts your focus to your surroundings, bringing you back to the here and now.

When to Use: Grounding techniques are particularly helpful during anxiety attacks or when you feel lost in your thoughts.

6. Journaling

Writing down your thoughts can be a great way to process your emotions and gain clarity. Journaling allows you to express your anxieties in a tangible way, which can help you better understand and manage them.

How to Practice: Set aside a few minutes each day to write about whatever is on your mind. You can also use prompts to guide your writing, such as “What is making me anxious right now?” or “What can I do to feel better?”

When to Use: Journaling is especially useful at the end of the day or whenever your anxiety feels overwhelming.

Get 20 journaling prompts to boost your mental health.

7. Exercise and Movement

Physical activity is a well-known stress reliever. Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators, which can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall sense of well-being.

How to Practice: You don’t need to hit the gym to get the benefits. Simple activities like walking, stretching, or doing yoga can be effective in relieving anxiety.

When to Use: Exercise can be a regular part of your routine or a quick go-to when you feel anxiety building.

Learn more: Does exercise really improve your mental health?

8. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses scents to promote emotional well-being. Certain essential oils have calming properties that can help reduce anxiety.

How to Practice: Use a diffuser with essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood. You can also apply diluted essential oils to your wrists or temples for a more immediate effect.

When to Use: Aromatherapy is particularly effective at bedtime or when you need to create a calming environment.

9. Listening to Calming Music

Music has a profound effect on our emotions and can be a powerful tool for managing anxiety. Listening to calming music can help slow your heart rate, lower blood pressure, and decrease levels of stress hormones.

How to Practice: Create a playlist of your favorite calming music or ambient sounds. Classical music, nature sounds, and slow-tempo songs are particularly effective in reducing anxiety.

When to Use: Play calming music during your workday, while commuting, or as part of your bedtime routine.

7 ways music effectively soothes anxiety.

10. Connecting with a Trusted Person

Social support is crucial when dealing with anxiety. Talking to someone you trust can provide comfort and help you gain perspective on your worries.

How to Practice: Reach out to a friend, family member, or therapist when you’re feeling anxious. Sometimes just talking about what’s bothering you can make a significant difference.

When to Use: Connecting with someone can be particularly helpful during moments of intense anxiety or when you’re feeling isolated.

11. Going Outside

Nature has a natural calming effect on the mind and body. Spending time outdoors can help ground you, reducing anxiety by reconnecting you with the earth.

How to Practice: Take a short walk in a park, sit under a tree, or simply stand barefoot on the grass. These activities can help you feel more centered and calm.

When to Use: Take advantage of being outdoors whenever possible, especially during breaks or when you’re feeling confined by indoor environments.

Managing anxiety is a personal journey. It’s important to find the techniques that work best for you. The 11 calming techniques outlined above are practical and easy to incorporate into your daily life.
